Daily Devotion: To Build A House

***August 7, 2024***

Thoughtful Starter:
In building a house, what do you think is the most important?

Today’s Scripture:  1 Corinthians 2:5
“ I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.”

Short Powerful Devotion

There is this story where two men built their houses. The first man built it on the sand while the other built it on a rock. When the storm came, the house built on the sand collapsed and its builder was called foolish. The house that was built on the rock withstood the storm and its builder was called wise. This is told by Jesus (Matthew 7:24-27) to illustrate the importance of having the right foundation.

Paul reminds us today in our scripture reading that our faith should not be based on human wisdom, which is like a shaky foundation of sand. Because our wisdom is constantly changing and limited compared to God.  Instead, our faith should rest on the solid foundation of God’s power which is constant and eternal. When we rely on our own understanding, we risk building our lives on a foundation that will crumble when challenges come. But when our faith is anchored in God’s power, we can stand firm, no matter what storms come our way.

Today’s verse challenges us to evaluate where we place our trust. Are we relying on our own wisdom, or are we trusting in God’s power to guide and sustain us? May we rest our lives to God’s power, the unshakeable foundation.

Today’s Reflection Question:
Are there areas in your life where you’ve been relying more on human wisdom than on God’s power?

Today's Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being a firm foundation on which I can build my life. Help me to trust in Your power rather than relying on my own wisdom or the wisdom of the world. When challenges come, remind me to stand firm in my faith, knowing that You are unchanging and completely trustworthy. Amen.
