Call me lame, but going to bed at eight is a luxury when you’re an adult.
Ticked most of the boxes on my to-do list.
Finished the house chores that needed to be done today.
Scheduled the posts for the following days on my website.
Okay, it’s time to go to bed.
I’m calling it a day.
A made-up bed is already waiting for me.
Time check: 7:51 PM.
It seems impossible. Unreal even.
So I double-check, it is 7:52 PM.
It’s not a dream, I’m really going to bed at 8 PM.
Not out of exhaustion from the day’s work. Not out of the anxieties in my head.
This started months ago when I was looking for the perfect time for my writing. I’ve always been an early bird, so this routine works the best for me.
Here’s how I do it.
Get in tune with your SELF
Have a body check. Are you feeling low on energy today? Probably your body is too tired from yesterday’s events. When you’re mentally exhausted, rescheduling those meetings would be the right choice. These are important to assess especially in the morning because they will determine your productivity for the entire day.
Get real with yourself first thing in the morning.
Do it ALL today then you will have another set tomorrow
The more tasks we do today, the freer we can be tomorrow. This is a wishful thinking. Our things-to-do and priorities change every day. And if we observe closely, once we’re done doing something, another task comes in. This sometimes eventually leads to mediocrity. Life is too short to be stuck to this kind of mindset. I don’t know about you but I’d rather do a few tasks today rightly than do many tasks filled with loopholes.
Get in tune with yourself, do the work diligently, and let the other tasks be tomorrow’s plate.
Don’t let your planner PLAN your day
This was one of my frustrations when I was beginning to be organized on my work-life balance. I start the day with my coffee while writing the tasks and priorities. At night, I look back on my planner and I would feel discouraged because I didn’t do all the things that I listed. ’Til I realize that I was the one who wrote on my planner in the first place.
I am the writer of my planner. Why am I letting it run and ruin my day?
Since then, I have given myself permission to allow lapses on my to-do list and forgive myself when I don’t do the “Top 3 priorities”.
The eraser and correction tape were made for a reason. Utilize them for your peace of mind.
As a result of incorporating these three tips, I’m more relaxed in doing the things that need to be done, and I can do more tasks than what I intend to do. Without hurrying and just focusing on one task at a time, my productivity skyrocketed. By honoring my state, I started to become kinder to myself. I don’t need to be so harsh and beat myself up every day. I became more relaxed.
This is how I manage to go to bed and sleep peacefully at night. Though it may not be perfect every day, the peace at the end of the day is there. I can sleep with that.
